Sugar Cane Type II 1947 Unwashed Raw Selvage-Denim Jeans
Manufactured from the finest, naturally grown cotton (no chemicals in the growing yields a higher water absorption rate when the indigo dye meets the threads, thus more beautiful fading over time from wear) in a lighter 12-ounce weight vs. 14.25 ounces on the 1947 style, this Sugar Cane jean style debuted in 2009 and is often referred to as the Sugar Cane 2009 Jean, though it is officially known as the Sugar Cane Type II 1947 Jean.
These jeans are patterned from the original Levi Strauss classic 1947 XX 501 but they have been given a bit of contemporary revision in cut: the front and back rises are slightly lowered, the legs tapered and narrowed, and the seat taken in, creating more of a fitted or tailored appearance, though they are not in any way a skinny or low-rise jean style. The lighter denim weight makes this a great jean for most climates, and they can be comfortably worn even in the warm-weather months. The combination of the new, lighter denim and the more contemporary fit have made these one of Sugar Cane’s most popular jean styles since its introduction.
Other than the leaner cut and lighter-weight denim, the basic styling details and hardware on these jeans remain the same as found on the famous Sugar Cane 1947 Jeans. Take note of these authentic features and details found only on a premium selvage jean of this pedigree:
- Button-fly, five-pocket construction
- Famous, hidden reinforcing rear pocket rivets to prevent scratching of saddles and furniture, which were deleted on 501 production in the 1950's
- Original-style paper flasher and labels employed on the outer packaging of the original dungarees
- Genuine, deerskin leather patch with Sugar Cane logo in a style and color reminiscent of that found on the original 501 XX's
- Custom manufactured from the finest, naturally grown, uneven-cotton yarns woven into 12-ounce selvage denim produced on the original shuttle looms employed back in the 1930's, including a color matching to the shade of blue employed in the manufacture of the original 501 XX dungarees and pink selvage edge
- Rope dyed with indigo
- Custom manufacturing of copper rivets and buttons to precisely match design style, size and dimension of the vintage pieces
- Custom manufacturing of the heavy, all-cotton twill to fabricate pockets, not the thin weaves found on many mainstream jeans made today
- Exact duplication of original stitch style throughout construction
- Exact color and grade matching of the all-cotton thread employed in original manufacture
- Exact duplication of 501 XX rear pocket shape and attachment stitching
- Riveted watch pocket
Non-sanforized, unwashed, raw-denim jeans will experience significant shrinkage after the initial wash and drying. Please see our SIZING TIPS for advice on how to get the correct fit in these non-sanforized, unwashed, raw-denim jeans. Unwashed, raw-denim measures can be found under the tab PRODUCT MEASUREMENTS.
We will also be glad to measure the waist of jeans we have in stock to be sure what we send you has the measurement you require, so please ask before ordering.
Fit/sizing: Waist sizes available 26, 27, 28, 29, 30, 31, 32, 33, 34, 36 & 38. Sizes up to and including 29 will have an approximate 32” inseam after washing; waist sizes 30-38 will have an approximate 34" inseam after washing. All sizes marked on label reflect approximate after-wash, post-shrinkage measurements; this means that a pair of one-wash jeans size 34 x 34 will have an approximate 34"-35"” waist measure and a approximate 33" inseam measure. Measures are always listed in approximate terms due to the erratic nature of selvage denim. Waist measures are the most erratic and can be 2" larger than the size on the label after shrinkage; waist measures will also stretch out permanently by about 1"-1.5" after being worn approximately 20-25 times.
When ordering, please feel free to state in the order notes the actual waist measurement you desire in the jeans being purchased and we will measure the jeans before shipping to you.

Sugar Cane Type III One-Wash Black Selvage-Denim Jeans
Manufactured from the finest, naturally grown cotton (no chemicals in the growing yields a higher water absorption rate when the indigo dye meets the threads, thus more beautiful fading over time from wear) in a lighter 13-ounce weight.
Black denim is a rare offering from Sugar Cane, and these jeans are quite special in this regard:
There are two different black yarns employed to craft this fabric. The warp is fabricated from sulfur-dyed yarn and the weft consists of a reactive, pigment-dyed yarn. The result is that the warp will fade over time from black to gray to near-white after significant wearing, whereas the weft will stay black and only fade to a medium gray, very slowly.
The jean cut is based from the original Levi Strauss classic 1947 XX 501 but they have been given a contemporary revision in cut: the front and back rises are lowered, the legs tapered and narrowed even more than the Type II 1947 style, and the seat taken in, creating a slim appearance from the knee down, though they are not in any way a pencil-leg jean style. The lighter denim weight makes this a great jean for most climates, and they can be comfortably worn even in the warm-weather months. The combination of this exotic, black denim and the contemporary fit have made these one of Sugar Cane’s most popular jean styles for wear with sneakers.

- Yarn-dyed black selvage denim
- Custom manufacturing of copper rivets and buttons to precisely match design style, size and dimension of the vintage pieces

Sugar Cane Unwashed, Raw Cotton-Covert Shirt, Black
Sugar Cane vintage-style shirts are for those who can appreciate the myriad of nuances and character found in the finest single-malt scotch, the clearest, most-colorless diamond or hand-crafted, centuries-old Persian rug. Nothing like this has been offered since the "good old days" of the 1930's - 1950's when clothing had to last by necessity. One look and you will be immediately transported back to an era when America was the unquestioned king of goods synonymous with top quality and durability.
This is rugged and stylish American history at its best, and it is also going to look fabulous when worn because it is cut to flatter the body, unlike the ultra-loose styles so often encountered everywhere today. This shirt is extremely special and will be most appreciated by the hardcore, vintage enthusiast, being crafted from a hard-wearing, unwashed, raw cotton-covert selvage fabric with random flecks of off-white and woven on vintage shuttle looms. Quantities are very limited.
Take note of these authentic features and details found only on a premium vintage-style shirt of this pedigree:
- Placket-front closure
- Open-top pockets with bar tacked corners for extra strength
- Collar stand for crisper appearance
- Double-stitching and rolled seams
- Reinforced shoulder yoke for greater durability at this crucial abrasion area
- Custom manufacturing of genuine urea buttons
- Custom manufacturing of a cotton-covert selvage fabric in the unwashed raw stage using vintage shuttle looms
- Chain-stitch runoff with selvage gusset at shirttail scallop edge
- All-cotton thread employed in construction, with red all-cotton thread employed in sewing interior seams
- Exact copy of the original-style rayon-on-cotton labels
- True vintage fit for flattering appearance, not sloppy, relaxed fit with droopy shoulder seams
Please note: The fabric is made of unwashed, lightly Sanforized fabric and will still shrink a bit after washing depending on how you launder this garment. After normal washing in cool water and line drying, expected shrinkage should be about 2% overall; drying in an electric dryer with heat could increase shrinkage and is not endorsed by the manufacturer.

Sun Surf Special Edition for Keoni of Hawaii: Hoolaulea in Hawaii
Keoni of Hawaii is an original brand for Sun Surf that was developed in 1996 with the cooperation of the great Hawaiian-shirt master designer of the 1940's, John Meigs. John was alive and well in 1996, and in conjunction with Sun Surf, his original, never-released designs of the 1940's were brought to life under this then-new relationship. By 2001, John's advanced age precluded further direct participation, and so other artists from around the world contributed to carry on the original concepts under the Keoni of Hawaii brand, all the while maintaining John's motto: "Let Hawaiian shirts be the bridge between Hawaii and Japan." Today, all designs under the brand are unique, one-of-a-kind creations available exclusively from Sun Surf that follow John's 1940's concepts with the same attention to artistic storytelling in true vintage form.
Keoni of Hawaii designs incorporate colors and color shades not found on the Sun Surf standard editions. Other original features include: one deftly matched invisible pocket, genuine wooden buttons that precisely match those found on the original shirt, and a label that precisely copies the vintage aesthetics and materials found in the 1940's. And to enhance the collectibility of this shirt, it comes in its own presentation/storage box. Once produced, the special edition is retired from production, thus ensuring each is extremely limited in quantity made.
Keoni of Hawaii designs are nearly impossible to obtain outside of Japan, and we are proud beyond words to have been able to obtain a few of this shirt print that stands out as one of the most unique ever offered.
To help preserve the fabric and colors, dry cleaning is the only laundering method endorsed by the manufacturer.
