Star of Hollywood Rattlesnake Shirt
Those of you familiar with the Sugar Cane, Buzz Rickson's, and Sun Surf brands we import from Japan will understand the dedication to quality, uniqueness of design, vintage aesthetics, and the employment of vintage machinery used to create their amazing articles of clothing that have been equally captured under the brand Star of Hollywood.
Star of Hollywood was an American brand of the 1950's that established a niche for producing some wildly unique shirt designs, with some of the more renowned featuring diamonds or tarantulas. The same manufacturing minds that have given us Sugar Cane, Buzz Rickson's, and Sun Surf have resurrected Star of Hollywood on a very limited basis. The shirt designs are original creations and not reproductions of what Star of Hollywood once produced, but the overall vibe and look is spot on with the original Star of Hollywood, making this a go-to label for those who thrive on standing out from the crowd in a retro way that's not at all dated.
This shirt is fabricated from the same pedigree of high-quality rayon acetate that perfectly duplicates the hand and weight of the long-lost rayon of the “good old days.” Just as with the original fabric it copies, this material is extremely breathable and airy, and it takes the original screen printing inks as splendidly as did the vintage originals.
Salient shirt details include:
- Custom manufacture of high-quality rayon acetate on vintage looms
- Discharge-printed graphics
- Vintage-style urea pearl buttons
- Single chest pocket
To help preserve the color and fabric, dry cleaning is the only laundering method endorsed by the manufacturer.
Please see our SIZING TIPS for advice on how to get the correct fit.

Sugar Cane 1947 Selvage-Denim Jeans, Pre-Shrunk, One-Wash
Manufactured from the finest double ring-spun Zimbabwe cotton, these are the premium, authentic, heavy-weight jeans worn by real cowboys and laborers in the first half of the 20th century. America seemingly lost the desire to manufacture jeans true to their original ancestry somewhere in the middle to late 1960's. Both the original fit and denim type of such classics as Levi’s 501 XX dungarees continue to be further diluted to this day, whereby only the style name remains unchanged.
Sugar Cane has masterfully recaptured the true color, look, fit, feel, quality and durability of the famous 501 XX dungarees of 1947. The 501 XXs of 1947 were basically just like the pre-war 501 XXs, as the critical materials and styling details banned by the War Production Board in 1942 were lifted for clothing manufacture in 1946. The dungarees of the “good old days” are slightly higher-wasted, fit looser in the seat and had a straight-leg design commonly called the “stovepipe.” Denim was really tough back then and, when new, rather rigid. The shuttle looms that fabricated the selvage denim were more narrow than projectile looms in use today to manufacture mainstream denim, producing a totally different weave and texture within the fabric, as well as a selvage edge absent from jeans made on high-speed projectile looms. It is partly this older selvage denim that gives the vintage jeans their interesting and totally unique character-rich look once they are worn and faded from use. Virtually every styling detail and nuance of 501 XXs has been duplicated, including the famous hidden pocket rivets; however, for obvious reasons, the “Levi” name on buttons and labels cannot be duplicated, nor can the arcuate pocket stitching, which is a Levi brand protected trademark. Sugar Cane jeans are like a resumption of the production of a long-lost classic rather than a reproduction or copy. Take note of these authentic features and details found only on a premium selvage jean of this pedigree:
- Button-fly, five-pocket construction
- Famous, hidden reinforcing rear pocket rivets to prevent scratching of saddles and furniture, which were deleted on newer 501 production
- Original-style paper flasher and labels employed on the outer packaging of the original jeans
- Genuine leather patch with Sugar Cane logo in a style and color reminiscent of that found on the original 501 XXs
- Custom manufactured from the finest double ring-spun Zimbabwe cotton of the correct, heavy 14.25-ounce selvage denim produced on the original shuttle looms employed back in the 1930s, including a color matching to the shade of blue employed in the manufacture of the original 501 XX jeans and pink selvage edge
- Custom manufacturing of copper rivets and buttons to precisely match design style, size and dimension of the vintage pieces
- Custom manufacturing of the heavy, all-cotton twill to fabricate pockets, not the thin weaves found on jeans made today
- Exact duplication of original stitch style throughout construction
- Color and grade matching of the all-cotton thread employed in original manufacture
- Exact duplication of 501 XX rear pocket shape and attachment stitching
- Riveted watch pocket, which had its rivets removed during the war years to meet War Production Board restrictions
One-wash jeans are rinsed once in cold water to produce a product that is fully shrunken and ready to wear; you don't need to worry about additional shrinkage of any consequence.
We will also be glad to measure the waist of jeans we have in stock to be sure what we send you has the measurement you require, so please ask before ordering.
Fit/sizing: Waist sizes available 26, 27, 28, 29, 30, 31, 32, 33, 34, 36 & 38. Sizes up to and including 29 will have an approximate 32” inseam, and waist sizes 30-38 will have an approximate 34" inseam. All sizes marked on label reflect approximate after-wash, post-shrinkage measurements; this means that a pair of one-wash jeans size 34 x 34 will have an approximate 34"-35"” waist measure and a approximate 33" inseam measure. Measures are always listed in approximate terms due to the erratic nature of selvage denim. Waist measures are the most erratic and can be 2" larger than the size on the label, so if you require a specific measurement for the waist and/or inseam, please contact us and we will let you know what we have available. Waist measures will also stretch out permanently by about 1"-1.5" after being worn approximately 20-25 times.

Sugar Cane 8.5-Ounce, Indigo-Dyed, Wabash-Stripe Shirt
This is from Sugar Cane's elite Fiction & Romance Collection. Garments offered in Fiction & Romance Collection meld vintage work clothing and fashion to levels of obsessive sickness that are insane even for Sugar Cane. Fabrics in this new collection are elevated to even higher reaches of quality and detail in the passionate pursuit to craft a finished product that will yield evidence of wear and fading indistinguishable from vintage garments, thus providing the wearer with unprecedented opportunity to sculpt their own personalized vintage look in a garment whose very design is as equally distinctive as the wearer. This shirt is guaranteed to amaze you with how great it ages the more it is worn!
This shirt design is based on an iconic style from the 1930's & 1940's. The fabric is 8.5-ounce all-cotton twill produced on vintage shuttle looms in a classic Wabash print and dyed with natural indigo. Some authentic styling details and features include: two-button strap collar, reinforced shoulder yoke, selvage edges on both sides of the interior frontal closure, chain-stitch runoff at the shirttail side plaits, asymmetric pockets, heavy-duty metal donut buttons lacquered in glossy black paint, and even authentic labeling and packaging.
This is rugged and stylish American history at its best that is designed to fit precisely in true vintage form and not hang off the shoulders like some department store nightmare full of slop and excessive sleeve length – the sort of shirts seemingly designed for apes who have been fed a diet consisting exclusively of fast food cooked in buckets of lard. Shun the disposable cookie-cutter look of the mass marketers and grab a bite of old-time machismo! Quantities are very limited.
Please take note of these unique features and details found only on a premium work shirt of this pedigree:
• Placket-front closure
• Asymmetric pockets with the right pocket having a button flap
• Collar stand for crisper appearance
• Two-button strap collar
• Bar tacking on pockets for extra strength at crucial stress points
• Custom-made metal donut buttons lacquered in glossy black paint

• Selvage edge on both sides of interior frontal closure
• Assembly with all-cotton thread
• Exact copy of the original-style printed-on-cotton labels in neck area and union label on shirttail
• Authentic paper label stapled to neck area (which should be removed before wearing)
• True vintage fit for flattering appearance, not the sloppy, relaxed fit with droopy shoulder seams so often encountered today
Sizes available: Med. - XL. Please see SIZING TIPS to determine the correct fit in this shirt.

Sugar Cane Hawaii Satokibi Pre-Shrunk, One-Wash Selvage-Denim Jeans
Sugar Cane Hawaii selvage-denim jeans comprise a blend of traditional techniques and styling with innovation and creativity in textile development. It starts with a basic vintage selvage jean style, in this case the famous Levi XX 501 button-fly, five-pocket selvage-denim jeans of 1947. These are the original vintage style, which is with a higher waist, looser seat and a straight, wider, non-tapering leg design commonly called the “stovepipe.” This traditional vintage design style is then married with the result of 25 years of research and experimentation into making the hardest-wearing, most exotic and innovative vintage-style selvage dungarees ever attempted, incorporating knocked–out distinctiveness in detailing and style.
The textile specialists at Sugar Cane were the first in the world to produce a selvage-denim fabric made from woven cotton yarns and sugar cane fibers. Cotton and sugar cane is harvested from Hawaii, hence the style name. The dyed yarns are then turned into the prized, coarse-weave Japanese selvage denim on slow-moving, vintage shuttle looms from the “good old days” of manufacturing in the USA.
This obsessive attention to detail, historical purity, unsurpassed quality and cutting-edge innovation gives birth to a Hawaii selvage-denim jeans weighing in at a super-coarse-and-beefy 14.25 ounces that dazzles the senses with deep, dark coloring and an intoxicating, delicately sweet scent, thanks to a strong helping of sugar cane in the fabric. Over time from wear, laundering, and use, this luscious denim yields fade marks, whiskering and striations that could never be achieved with thinner, less coarse denim, be it selvage or otherwise.
Other features of this Premium Selvage Denim include: Pockets lined with cotton fabric in facsimile of a Japanese sugar cane sack; leather horsehide hair-on patch on waist as found on some classic vintage dungaree styles, with the branded wording “Aloha Denim” and an image of a sea turtle; detail stitching on rear pockets is sewn by hand using heavy cotton thread made from sugar cane in the stitch style of a very traditional, centuries-old Japanese design, and this style has its own unique green-line selvage edge on the denim that distinguishes it from one any of the other Sugar Cane styles. This is some of the finest denim in the world, where the exotic meets luxury and durability. This is Sugar Cane. Or, as the Japanese call it – Satokibi!
