The chronograph watch is
an essential component for anyone performing tasks requiring the utmost
in precise, time-related calculations. Pilots, naval shipboard and artillery
officers, as well as doctors and related medical personnel, all rely on
this timepiece for a host of diverse, time keeping requirements. Hanhart
was one of the leading German producers of chronographs in the ‘30’s
and ‘40’s, and though they produced now-famous and highly-sought
examples for issue to the Luftwaffe and Kriegsmarine, other styles of
chronographs were produced for commercial consumption, these usually being
more stylized and elegant. Unfortunately, some of these watch designs
never got into production before the end of the Second World War. The
war needs of Germany consumed its work force by 1944, and such frivolous
notions of luxury, as realized in some commercial watch designs, simply
had no place any longer within a nation fighting for survival. Hanhart
had envisioned and laid plans to build yet another marvelous chronograph
watch based on its existing military designs, only this time increasing
the capabilities of the watch, as well as utilizing only automatic 28-jewel
movements. This new design called for a third small dial for registration
of hours lapsed, a date window, optional matte-finished silver dial face,
and a see-thru case back. What would have likely been Hanhart’s
most ingenious use to date, of a tried and proven design already in their
production line, never came to be. Once the company resumed production
in the early years after the war, it was deemed more financially feasible
to stay with watch designs that had already been in production and demonstrated
their worth, thus many of the plans laid some years earlier for new designs
were again passed over. It is believed some existing chronograph watch
cases were possibly experimented with during the war and outfitted as
prototypes for a few of Hanhart’s more visionary designs, however
the bombing of Germany turned many company archives into dust, thus no
documentation to this end has ever been found, nor has any experimental
prototype been located.
Alas, with the expansion of the new Hanhart company today and the great
demand that lead to them bringing back their old classics, it was decided
that now is the time to dust off the blue prints of their super-chronograph
- The Watch That Almost Was - and bring it to life exactly as it was originally
intended. Now this grand and multi-tasking chronograph is reality; called
the Sirius, it is the top-end watch in Hanhart’s Classic Collection.
Unquestionably the most for the money in any like chronograph wristwatch
on the market today, and able to equal or outperform any of its rivals.
The Sirius Chronograph combines visionary advances from the 1940’s
in a proven and classic body and movement from the same time, thus providing
the market with a watch of ultimate function and unique history. Like
many planned Luftwaffe aircraft of the same time period that never saw
production, the Sirius would have been a very formidable and awe-inspiring
piece of German engineering. Sirius - the dream is now reality!
